On 15 May 2016, 77 year old Mr Lim Hang Chiang, fell backwards after reversing his mobility scooter out of the lift at Pasir Ris Street 21 without realizing that the lift was about 13 cm higher than the lobby floor. He knocked his head and died in the hospital on the next day.
In the coroner's inquiry, it was found that this particular lift had a history of mislevelling. There were at least 6 such incidents between December 2015 and March 2016.
With Singapore's population rapidly aging, lift breakdowns need to be fixed as urgently as MRT breakdowns. Hopefully this is the first and last of such tragic accidents that we will see in Singapore.
